Despite being around for over 150 years, Crittall doors and windows feel as contemporary as ever.

In fact, metal framed glass doors and windows have never looked so good.

Crittall Doors

About Crittall

The name Crittall comes from Francis Henry Crittall, an ironmonger in Essex who conceived and manufactured steel framed windows back in the 19th century in Essex, UK.

The term ‘Crittall style’ is commonly used to describe metal frame doors and windows with glass panels. However, it is important to remember that CRITTALL is a registered trademark dating back to 1928, and only ‘Window frames, casements and doors and parts thereof, all made of metal’ that are supplied by Crittall Windows Ltd can be described as Crittall.

Though there are other manufacturers, the long standing reputation of the Crittall company means that people have come to use their name in a generic manner to refer to all doors and windows with metal or metal look perimeters and bars. However, it is not a generic term, and Crittall points out that the terms ‘Crittall Style’ and ‘Crittall Type’ should also not be used to describe other doors of this style.

Bearing in mind the above, alternative terms such as ‘Industrial Style, Loft Style, Metal Framed, Heritage’ should be used to describe doors and windows of this type.

Interior Doors and Partitions in the Crittall Style

Doors and partitions in the Crittal Style have been dominating the feeds on Instagram. They offer a perfect combination of both the classic and the modern. Suiting just about any property, from older homes to modern newbuilds.

With their slim profiles and high glass-to-frame ratio, Crittall style doors help add a stylish and contemporary feel to any interior design. Choices of sliding doors, hinged systems, folding and pocket doors, and fixed glass partitions allow you to partition open areas whilst allowing the all-important light that we crave in the UK to flow through the home.

Alternatives to Crittall

Due to the popularity of Crittall style doors, a wide choice of alternative suppliers and product variations has become available. As we touched on previously, only doors supplied by Crittall can be called Crittall Doors and we should instead refer to terms such as ‘Industrial Style, Loft Style, Metal Framed, Heritage’. Some of the alternatives are great and others are not so good. Here, we consider our favourites for quality, choice and service.
